|Shimano dual control lever rear upshift problem||tjl|

|I have a 1998 bike with Shimano RSX dual control levers (7 speed rear, triple front). Recently, the small lever for the rear (right) shifter has been malfunctioning; it often has no resistance when pressed, unlike the normal resistance which you push through to shift. In that case, the small lever can be pushed as far as it will go, with no clicking or upshifting. Often, it takes several tries before a normal upshift occurs.
It appears as though there is play in the large lever (the one also used for braking). If I hold the large lever still while pressing the small lever, it feels normal and causes an upshift.
Is this a common problem, and what can be done to fix it?

|It sounds like the small set screw that holds the inner lever in place has come out. Look at the front shifter, directly below the hand holds, the upper back part of the levers. There should be a phillips head screw(possibly a hex head) attached to the upper part of the inner lever, now look at the rear shifter and see if that screw is in place. Shimano will send this to you or your LBS free of charge as a warranty part. 949 951,5003 US tel.|

|I couldn't find any hex or philips head screws on either lever. I looked around the outside of the levers, pulled back part of the hood, and looked inside while pulling the lever back as if braking. Is the screw you are referring to on the moving part of the lever or the fixed part? There appears to be a flat head rivet on the fixed part (but it is present on both the left and right levers). Any other ideas?|

|Check the cables and housing. Make sure they are not damaged, then try cleaning and then lubing them with a light lube like Tri Flo. If they are original and the bike has some miles on it they may need to be replaced.|

|You may have to move the small lever out of the way laterally.Screw is behind it on some stups and up high on the back of the big lever where it attaches to the shift housing. Both levers have the same screw.|

|A friend of mine had a similar problem with her left RSX 7-speed shifter. Several mechanics tried but failed to fix it. I replaced the shifters, cassette, chain, and rear hub with 9-speed 105. It now shifts perfectly with the original derailleurs and crank set. If you have 130mm rear drop-out spacing you too could upgrade to 9-speed.
