Campy Ergobrain 10 set-up(11 posts)

Campy Ergobrain 10 set-upParticleMan

Hi All
I have a Prince/Campy Record bike. I am looking at bike computer options..one is to go wireless with a Cateye or Vetta. The othe ris to go Campy - the Ergobrain 10. However, I have heard that its set up is complicated and troublesome, and that it can fail at times.

Anyone has experience in setting up and using this computer? Does it make the bike look cluttered with teh cables? Can the cadence sensor work with Loo PP396 pedals?

Thanks very much for any advise, comments. Cheers to all, and have a good ride!

I have used an Ergobrain since last July. I have heard of some the reliabilty issues, but so far mine's working fine. I do like the functions.

The setup is really quite easy; it's pretty much automatic. I wouldn't worry about that part of it if you get the Ergobrain.

As far as the wires go, you can conceal them OK, but it is kind of a drag having wires run down the down tube, etc. I took some of the clear protection tape that Colorado Cyclist sells as chainstay protection and cut it into strips to fasten the wires. Pretty much invisible.

The magnet Campy provides won't work with the Looks if they have a hex head on the end of the spindle (it will fall off). I know with Record cranks and speedplay pedals it didn't work. I found a replacement magnet for $2.10 here http://www.indigo.com/magnets/neodymium-magnets.html that works very well. I think I got the 12.5mm diameter one.

Good Luck,
Bryan

I'm with B2 on this one. I've used one since February, riding in wet (UK) conditions. Setup is easy and the unit is reliable. The lever buttons have little tactile feel but despite my early misgivings, continue to function. I don't use the cadence feature primarily because of the wiring which B2 notes. I bought it primarily for the gear indicators. If you don't need either the gear indicators or cadence, look elsewhere.

I've been using one for a good year now. The magnet will work as long as your pedals have steel spindles. The only pain I've found is as your Ergo's wear out it shows up on the Brain with the gear selector long before you really need to rebuild them.

Thanks guys
I might give it a shot...it would be nice to have an all campy set up...but not sure aboutn the cadence wire...i am using a Prince in a custom orange color, and the cable will stand out on the downtube..

i also find that now with a 10 speed cogset..i tend to look down more often to check which gear i am in..not too safe and good! so, i do need a gear indicator.

but i am sourcing for a good value on them before i purchase. its still pretty expensive for a cyclo computer.

cheers all

I have ergobrains on two Opera bikes for two years. Setup was simple and reliability has been great.

I ran the cadence wire along the front derailler cable along the side of the down tube and used small zip ties to keep it connected to the cable rather than the downtube. I have not had one bit of trouble doing it this way. It is hardly noticeable and best of all, I did not connect anything to my bike frame to damage the paint. (I do have one zip tie on the chain stay just behind the bottom bracket and of course the cadence sensor mounted to the chainstay.)

My suggestion after using the ergobrain for two years... go for it, you'll love it.

I use Campy pedals. But the ergobrain comes with two magnets for the cadence sensor. One can only be used with Campy and is hidden in the pedal bolt, the other magnet would mount on your crank arm with a zip tie. Not as clean looking as the Campy set up but not that big of a deal (more important to use the pedals you like.)

Have a Happy New Year

The Brain WILL NOT WORK WITH SHIMANO PEDALS.
You Guys seem to like the Ergobrain better than reviewers.Ambishawn
