Replacement Rim for Heliums?(6 posts)

Replacement Rim for Heliums?Wayne

Ruined the rim on a tubular Helium front wheel at a cross race this weekend. Does Mavic still make that rim and if so, what is it?
How about some other lightweight alternatives?

Its an Open Pro rim. The rear is 28 holes, front is 24 (I think). I've heard that one of these rims is hard to find due to the number of holes (24, I'm guessing). I don't think the spokes are anything out of the ordinary, so you could probably replace the rim with any 24/28 hole rim.

I'd contact Mavic and ask. Before you spend too much money fixing them, remember, you can get a nice, new set of Open Pro (or Reflex for tubies) with DA hubs for $250. Probably weigh the same as the Heliums and are tougher.

If you'll look back a ways you'll find a recent thread on replacment Helium rims. Someone posted that they are still available from MAVIC. The front wheel has 26 spokes, rear has 28 (that is on the clinchers). An Open Pro should work for the rear.

I had this problem last winter. I called Mavic and was told they would support these wheels for several more years. It was suggested I purchase the spokes and rim through a lbs and rebuild the wheel, and was given the proper spoke tensions, (which I don't recall as I had no intention of tackling this myself). The other option I was given was to return the hub through a lbs and have it rebuilt by Mavic. I chose the latter option using Excel Sports as the lbs, and by the way thanks Excel as no one else wanted to bother, and the wheel turnaround was about one month. The wheel has been perfect since.

I think it was $129, which would have included shipping to and from Mavic and back to me. I looked through year-old statements and found one for this amount that corresponds to the time I had the wheel rebuilt.
