What Tire Sizes Will Fit the Mavic OP's?B2

How big a tire will fit on the Mavic Open Pro's?

700x32? 700x35? I suppose it depends on the specific tire?

Where's the best deal for inexpensive tires in this size range?

Thanks Much,
Bryan

You can run really wide tires on Open Pros. I have 32mm cross tires on a set, and I could easily go larger. However unless you own a 'cross or hybrid, you'll most likely not be able to install a wide tire on your bike. Current brake calipers limit you to about a 28mm tire - anything larger will not fit thorugh the brake opening (unless you remove the air form the tire). Also, check your tire clearance at the seat stays and on the fork, many bikes have minimal clearance and will not accept larger tires.

Thanks

I just picked up a Soma Double Cross. They advertise it as accepting 700x38 plus fenders so I think I'll have plenty of clearance. Of course I won't be able to use standard road calipers.

I'll use it primarily as a commuter. Do you think 700x32 will provide sufficient protection from the potholes you can't see in the dark :-) ?

My 32mm knobby tires that I use for winter commutes are very smooth in comparision to the 23mm tires that I use for commuting in the summer. The larger the tire the cushier the ride. My commute speed average dropped by about 0.5 MPH due to the larger tires, so don't be too concerned about the rolling resistance.
