Are there any specifications I should keep in mind when getting a collar for a carbon seatpost (road)?

Try to get the widest collar you can to fit your seat tube. When you fit it make sure you don't align the cutouts - the one in the seat tube and the one in the collar - 180 degrees is best - it prevents a 'pinching' of the carbon in the juncture of the cutout in the seat tube.

If you're looking for a collar specifically designed for carbon seat posts, Campagnolo makes one with an offset bolt. It comes with their Record carbon post, and some LBS's can sell you just the collar for about $30. Make sure it actually fits your seat tube first though because I've been told it may not fit the same on all bikes. I just installed a Syncros carbon seat post on my road bike and did what the other person suggested. You take the existing collar and spin it around 180 degrees. This does the same job as the Campy gadget but for a lot less $$. Also, don't use any grease and above all, do NOT over torque it.
