I can't rememeber. Is there a difference between frame width for bikes built for 7 speed rear wheels versus 8/9 speed rear wheels?

Older 7 speed bikes are more narrow than current bikes - 126mm vs. 130mm. However many newer frames that came with 7 speeds were spaced at 130mm. What year is the frame?

I'd put my money on 126mm spacing. If it's a steel or titanium frame you can still use 130mm spaced wheels in it. If it's aluminum or carbon I'd look for a set of older hubs.
