|I have an Ultegra chain and I want to put a powerlink on it for ease of installation and cleaning. Is this a no-no?
I will get an SRAM chain eventually, but I have only 1000 miles on the Ultegra chain yet with little to no wear. I clean and lube often, but I have a SRAM chain on my sugar and love it.

"Lastly, the PowerLinks may ONLY be used with the corresponding SRAM PowerChains. The tolerances of other chains, made by other manufacturers (Shimano, KMC, etc.), will not mate properly with the PowerLink system."
Check the discussion archives here, though, and you'll find plenty of people who say they work fine with Shimano chains. Could be that SRAM would rather sell you a complete chain than just the Powerlink, and are covering their corporate butts from liability at the same time. If you want to try it, just be sure you get the correct link-gold for 9 speed, silver for 8 speed.
