Can you swap Shimano crank arms out without changing bottom bracket and chain rings? I am wanting to shorten my RSX crank arms and was hoping not to touch the bottom bracket. Can I get a Shimano Ultegra or 105 crank set and just use the arms? Will the drill and bolt pattern be the same?

Squrae BB = RSX, RX100, Sora, Tiagra
Splined BB = 105, Ultegra, Dura-Ace
- You cannot interchange the 2 types.

Do you have a 7, 8, or 9 speed setup?
(I think RSX was either 7 or 8)

Why do you want to re-use chainrings?
(At the cost of a Tiagra or Sora new crank it may not be worth it.)

Check out becasue they have decent prices on cranks. Go with the Tiagra for 9 speed or the Sora for 8 speed.

Sora $55

Tiagra $59.95

Buy a new one and sell the old one on ebay.

You have to consider matching the cranks to the correct spindle length as will as spindle type.RSX,7 and 8 speed double used a 107mm, and the triples used a 118mm.Sora and Tiagra doubles use 110mm and triples use a 113mm.(QBP catalog)

I think you missed my question. Spindle length refers to a bottom bracket dimension, right? I just want to change out the RSX crank arm for a 105 or Ultrega so I can avoid changing the bottom bracket. Are the drill holes and threading systems interchangeable for the RSX, 105 and/or Ultegra?

My setup is 8 speed RSX but that shouldn't matter. What does matter, however, is that I forgot to say it's a triple crank.

Shimano doesn't make a 165 Tiagra or Sora.

The reason I want to just try to change the crank arms is that I believe my RSX bottom bracket will not be compbatible with the 105 or Ultegra crank. If I can avoid touching/chaning the bottom bracket, I can save $$$.
