|Ultegra 53/39 with XT 13-34 and Ultegra or XT rd.
I'm trying to find an inexpensive alternative to a triple.

|if you want to use an ultegra rear derailleur, it has to be a long cage/triple! on my old 'cross bike, i ran ultegra cranks with an xt rear and a 12/25 for race day. since it also doubled as my mountain bike, i had an 11/32 and never had a problem. just make sure whatever r/d you choose is a long cage!|

|I have used the same set-up (using Dura-Ace instead of Ultegra) on my road bike for over a year. For the best shifting with no problems use an XT rear der. You should install a longer chain too. Here is a good site to find the best Shimano prices, although I've had the best success with JensonUSA for great prices and excellent service.
|Never heard of a 13-34 cogset. Know only 11-32, 11-34, 12-34.||Markus_B|

|And:I would chose the XT der. for I am not sure if even the triple Ultegra der. works with a 34 teeth cog.
And: Did you consider the fact that compared to a road triple with a road cogset, you will have larger gear transmission ratio differences? You may dislike that on a road bike.
