|Shimano Dura Ace Upgrade Kit:: compatibility with existing 8-speed components?||Avidrider|

|I currently own Dura Ace 8 speed and am considering purchasing the Dura Ace 9 speed upgrade kit which includes new shifters, chain, cassette and rear derailleur. My Dura Ace crankset and bottom bracket is 1996 model 7410 and am currently running Stronglight chainrings.
Can I still run the existing crankset, bottom bracket and front derailleur and just get by with purchasing the Dura Ace chainrings or are there any other compatibility issues?

|You won't have any problems. Shimano advises getting the 9 speed inner ring but it makes little to no difference. I have the 7410 and added the 9 speed kit some time ago and it all works fine. When I first put it on I made a mental note to watch the shifts to the 39 ring to see if there were any problems. About 2 hours later I realized I had forgotten to pay attention to front shifts at all and never even noticed it. I guess that means it works the same. There is supposed to be the possibility of the chain "skating" between the two rings with the old crank but I have never had that happen.|

|I've been using an 8 speed DA crank and front derailleur along with an otherwise 9 speed DA drivetrain with no problems. I even tried a 9 speed inner chainring but switched back to the 8 speed ring because it made no difference.
BTW, there is no way for the chain to wedge between the rings when using an 8 speed crank. Just an urban legend.

|Thanks for the comments!! - I think that will save me the cost of purchasing the chainrings.|

I am building up a 1996 Giant CFR, preferably with Dura Ace 8 speed. What are you planning on for your old parts. I would like to purchase them if you didnt have nay plans. It would save you the trouble of ebaying them. Please let me know soon via emai. email@example.com
