12-27 cassette with double(8 posts)

12-27 cassette with doubleYatesie

I am considering changing from triple to double. I currently have a 12-25 cassette but am considering the 12-27 for climbing with the double. I was told by my LBS that I would need a triple rear d'rail for the 12-27 and I could use my triple front d'rail for the double. Will this work?

Many (including myself) have used a 12/27 cassette with a standard cage derailleur without any problem. I'm not so sure if Shimano recommends it though.

You don't need to use a triple cage for a double with 12-27, it's totally unnecessary. I even got a regular cage to work on a triple / 12-27 with a carefully tuned chain length and making sure to never use the extreme gears.

I have used this combo for several years and love it. You don't need a long cage derr. the max tooth on the short cage is 27 and if you get the chain length right it will work out great. I think the front der. will work but not as well as a double. You must adjust your limits to avoid shifting to the third ring.

I use a 12x27 double when I'm going to be riding hilly stuff. I even bought a 38 tooth small front ring for hilly touring. Every little bit helps. There are times when I wish I had a triple, but not enough of them to justify it to me.

I'm not sure I understand your question. You have a triple and you want to convert to a double? You'd need new cranks/rings, a new BB, a new FD and (I think but am not sure) new shift levers. Your RD is fine and you can use a 12x27 with it, or buy a new double RD and still use the 12x27 with it.

I currently have a mixture of 105 and ultegra components on a Trek 5200 and I want to convert to a double to save some weight and to put my old components back on my Trek 2200. I will probably go with Ultegra for the entire package except maybe a D/A for the crankset. I've read that the Ultegra STI shifters will work for double or triple.

9 speed ultegra shifters work with a double or triple.

the shimano double and triple derailleurs have the same "teeth capacity". The only difference is that the longer cage of the triple allows to wrap more extra chain.

You don't need a front triple derailleur with a double setup, it won't shift as good.
