Oversize bar/stem combo advantages?(6 posts)

Oversize bar/stem combo advantages?iuratus

I was wondering if someone could tell me if I could derive any advantage from an OS bar/stem. I'm 5'9", 145 lbs and a climber, so I'm not really flexing things like someone more powerful would be. I should go with 26mm clamp, right? Also, any recommendations on which bar/stem combo I should spec? something light, but not all that expensive -- I'm looking to keep the combined price of the bar and stem under about $120. thanks

Yeah, you shouldn't need to use the OS stuff. The biggest advantage I've found from it is stiffness - and I don't even think it is necessary with the new breed of bar / stem combos.

Are you using a fork with a carbon steerer? If so, you'll need to consider that. Most stems accomodate them, but if you are looking in the budget category, you might find some that don't.

Also consider the stack height - if your stem has spacers under it, you should consider one with more stack height (to reduce the number of spacers). Also think about the angle, that's another way to fine tune your position.

I'd look into ITM Millennium stem with a Pro 260 bar. That's a pretty stiff, yet light setup. Note, the ITM bars are pretty deep though.

Ritchey has a nice setup, and they offer ergo bend bars in a shallow drop. The "Pro" line is nearly as nice as the WCS stuff, sans ti bolts and other weight saving gizmos.

Personally, I'm partial to the Thomson stem and ITM Pro 260 bars. Really stiff. Rather light. Around $110 for the pair, and you can find them on EBay for less.

i'm about the same height, weight as you. i also love climbing.
i have the deda magic combo. i previously used a cinelli quill stem and cinelli bars (can't rem. what they were)

the magic bar/stem is a very stiff combo, gives a very solid feeling no flex at all.

i think its worth it, only problem is finding brackets for computer, i made mine (cateye mity 3) fit by using a zip-tie instead of the screw.

Besides stiffness, some guys also like the OS bars because they feel the slightly larger diameter bar fits their hands better. I use an OS TTT Zepp XL stem with the OS Deda Newton 31.7 bars and love this setup, stiff, light and I like the slightly larger diameter bars. The deda magic bar/stem combo is basically the exact same as the Newton, just a touch heavier.

I thought oversize bars where only wider in the center, where the stem clamps to the bars? How does this make hands fit better?

many of them are oversized throughout the entire pipe to make them stiffer.
