Is the spacing between the chain stays different for a bike with 6spd wheels vs. a modern 9spd bike?

Older bikes are either 120mm or 126mm while the newer 9 speed are 130mm. If you have a steel frame it's possible to spread the rear dropouts to fit. If it's an aluminum frame, you're pretty much out of luck. The one exception is a Vitus aluminum frame. I've spread an older one to fit 9 speed without problems.
