|About the famous Ultegra rattle...||PeterRider|

|Well, until 2 days ago, I was thinking "what is really this Ultegra shifter rattle that everybody is talking about ??" and "I must be lucky, I don't hear any noise". |
And then, on saturday, part of the ride was on roads that were in bad condition. Really bad. Like, the whole bike was shaking like crazy. Well, then my Ultegra left shifter was rattling, while the right Dura-Ace shifter was not noisy. I checked, the famous little screw was still there. When the road became good again, no more rattle.
So my question to the people who experienced this rattle is: does it take place on every road, or only on very bad roads, when your handlebar itself is shaking quite a lot ?
Also, is there still the problem with recent versions (2002) ?

|The rattle that you hear is not the "famous" rattle. My daily commute takes me along a pedistrian overpass made of wood. The 8" slats run perpendicular (sp?) to the direction of travel. My shifters rattle like crazy on the bridge. My current Ultegra and my old RSX make the same noise. If I listen close I can hear my internal organs boucing about to.|

You may be experiencing the "other" Ultegra rattle, which happens when the top cap vibrates. A simple fix is detailed in this URL.

|I have 2002 and the left one rattles like crazy on rough roads, not on smooth. It's not the cap nor "the screw". No one seems to be able to fix it and all I've been told is that it is a known problem by shops and Shimano with no cure.|

|Try this little test the next time you're on rough roads: Lightly press your finger against the small paddle and see if the rattle disappears. On my Ultegra shifters, the paddles are rattling against the brake levers.

|You might want to try a small rubber band wrapped a few times around the smaller lever to act as a buffer. I know Dura-Ace has a bushing between the two levers.|| |
