If you have an SRAM chain with a "super link" then you can take it apart by hand. You can tell if you have the removable link as it will be a different color than the rest of the links, and you will be able to see that the chain pin can slide a little in a notch. The way to take this apart is 1) get all the tension off the chain, 2) simultaneously squeeze the side plates together while pushing the ends of the links together. Think of this as trying to make the chain narrower and shorter at the same time. You'll mess around with it a few times, being sure that it will never come apart, and then it will just fall apart in your hands. A little practice is required. Having the chain nice and clean makes this job easier and a lot more pleasant.

If your chain doesn't have a special link, then just use a regular chain tool.
