|I want to say it was around 1997, Although Shimano marketed the group as 600 Ultegra for at least a year.|

|Actually, since the 6400 series came to market (circa 1988) it was always called 600 Ultegra( still have a couple of the early brochures and Bicycling mags of the day showing it...or you can look at the boxes where the parts came in...clearly stated 600 Ultegra(also still have an 8-spd and a 7spd hubset laying around that clearly show this). The previous iteration (6 speed ) was 600EX although I don't remember if there was anything earlier than that.In any case '97 sound right since it was when the new 9spd stuff came out.
|That makes sense. I know the packaging was marked||Dave Hickey|

|600 Ultegra. Did the components themselves ever say 600 Ultegra?|

|I had a crankset that said 600 Ultegra, as well as brakes, and the little round decals on the STI shifters said "600 Ultegra" as well, with three color bars adjacent to the wording.|

|They did not say 600 Ultegra, they said "Shimano 600".
If I knew how to post a picture, I would, but you can see a crank up close @

|Actually, though they no longer call it 600, you'll see that number displayed clearly on the current Ultegra headset.|| |
