I'm looking at buying a entry level road bike and the bikes I'm interested in have Cyclone or FXA cranks.Do they compare to Sora or better off upgrading?

If you are considering a bike with a Sora drivetrain and are already considering upgrading the crank, I'd suggest looking at Tiagra equipped bikes insted. Here's why:

1. The cost of a Tiagra equipped bike with the stock crank isn't going to be much more than the comparable Sora equipped bike with an upgraded crankset. Generally the cheapest way to buy bike components is when they are bolted onto a frame.

2. Sora is has an 8-speed cassette and Tiagra has 9. That one cog might not sound like a big deal, but it means that you can upgrade the drivetrain one item at a time as the components wear out. With a Sora equipped bike, you pretty much have to upgrade everything at once or just stick with Sora.
FWIW, I agree completely. Save for Tiagra to start with. (nm)retro
