My Ultegra shifters/levers rattle like crazy, especially on rough roads. The bike shop says there's no fix other than replacing them. Anybody got a better solution?
The exact reason I now ride Dura Ace. nmJuanmoretime

I have both Dura Ace and Ultegra. big difference besides price. I've fixed the Ultegra on my wifes bike, it was just the top cap. I used carazy glue to stop it from rattling. The new Ultegra has a cap screw like dura Ace to solve that problem. There is a small phillips screw in the front under the small shifter lever (move the lever to see it). You can try tightening that. Also, there is another screw under the shifter (open up quick release brakes to see it. My Ultegra rattles no matter what I do. It works find, but hit a little bump, and it rattles. Whenever I get some extra cash, they are history. Shame, cause the old 8 speed Ultegra was a great group. Don't ever try to take them apart.

Look on the back of the brake lever on both shifters. There should be a screw on the back that holds a piece in place. If that screw is loose or missing you got a rattle. Also check the top cap as suggested in another post.

I removed the top caps after failure to secure them sufficiently for more than a fortnight stretch at a time. Perfectly quiet and very BladeRunner...

I have removed the top caps and still have both sides rattling! I can't seem to find anything to get them to stop. I notice that when I ride, I ride the tops of the hoods and hold the levers to keep them quiet. Not a great solution.

I have the same problem. Left, brand new Ultegra level rattles. Its not the cap, or the screw behind the lever. I do the same with keeping my hands on the hoods over the not-so-rough terrain. Sucks don't it? Any non-screw/cap fixes for this short of buying Dura Ace?
Chain Reaction Bicycles web site has the fix (for me)teamsloppy

Chain Reaction Bicycles has the fix. It worked for me.

Probably two things going on here. First, check your gear they head from the levers to the stops on the frame, the left and right cables frequently touch each other, and even the slightest bump can make them clang against each other. Best fix we've found in such cases is to tie them together loosely with a zip tie.

But even more likely you've got loose plastic nameplates on each of your levers. You can test this by bouncing your front wheel from a distance of an inch or so and note the noise you get. Next, grab the front of the brake levers and try it again. If the noise goes away, it's those darned plastic nameplates. Here's the fix!
I'm a Disgruntled Ultegra user too!!!!!Ligon

My Ultegra rattles like crazy. I have tightened screws and glued topcaps, and they still rattle. As soon as I get a little extra cash I am going to get dura-ace.
