Play in wheel bearings(4 posts)

Play in wheel bearingsMarkN

I've just purchased a pair of Mavic Cosmos wheels and I'm pleased with them. However, there is a certain amount of play in the wheel bearings - the wheels can be moved from side to side by a small amount. My previous cheaper hand-built wheels have no such movement. Should there be any play? If yes, how much? Do I just need to tighten them with the supplied spanner?

Q1: No
Q2: None
Q3: Yes - just use the supplied tool to take out the play but do not overtighten as that will destroy your hub just as fast or faster.

When adjusting, keep in mind that Q/R skewer may add load to the bearings. Trial-and-error here is the way to go -- tighten a bit, re-install wheel, and check for play. You want to just eliminate the play and no more!
is this play when the wheel is clamped in the frame?rufus

wheels should have a tiny bit of play when they are out of the bike and you spin them by hand. clamping them with the quick release removes this play.
