|I'm trying to use a Salsa Classic Road (threaded 1 in )stem with my new DeBernardi steel frame and its a really tight fit.-can't get stem past max line. Its a 57 frame so theres plenty of tube length. Anyone else experience this problem. I went to 2 bike shops and they both couldn't get to fit-1 shop deburred and reamed steer tube-still no go. I tried 2 different stems in 2 steel frames and both would go no further down then max line. So they hooked me up with some kind of Profile threaded adapter and a Salsa 11/8 SUL stem-I really want to ride my new bike soon so this works for now, but it looks like hell.
I really wanted to use a Salsa quill stems but I don't want to ruin my frame-wahts up.
I'm thinking of either getting like an ITM or a TTT quill and trying those. Or maybe a Cinelli adapter (I really don't like the idea of my ride being jerry-rigged up tho.
PS thanks in advance to RBR discussion users for helping me build up my ride-and not be a the complete mercy of bike shops. I promise i'll stop posting questions soon enough!

|Salsa classic road stems are painted cromoly - paint ends at maximum insertion line, rest of shaft is bare cromoly - I couldn't insert past end of paint - used a Scotchbrite pad to take down paint a little. Worked like a charm! I don't forsee any problems-provided I keep stem well greased at regular maintenance intervals.|

|Had to do the same thing with a painted Ritchey one time, and I was going to suggest it when your fix popped up. BTW, I used it for years with no rust problems.|| |
