Creaking Headset(5 posts)

Creaking HeadsetPart Time
Aug 22, 2002 9:18 AM
I have a 2001 Lemond Titanium Victoire which has an integrated headset. About two months ago, I installed a shorter stem (TTT Forgie). I recently started to get creaking in my headset over bumps or when I pull back on the bars. Does anyone have suggestions how to make the creaking stop? Please stop the Creaking!

Chances are, it's the stem or spacers not the headset. Try taking off the stem and spaces. Clean the steer tube, spacers, and stem. Apply a lightweight grease to the steer tube. (I use Slick Honey or Judy Butter) Then, reassemble. The creaking should go away.

...I take it apart and put a thin film of grease on both sides of the aluminum spacer and reinstall. That takes care of it until I get caught in another heavy downpour. I also regrease the face plate bolts and use a torque wrench to reinstall.
When my headset creaks...Part Time

I tried your suggestion and I am still getting creaks. I am hoping it isn't my star nut in my fork. When my headset was new, it came loose a few times so after I tightened my stem I would tighten the top bolt a little more.

Could my star nut be creaking?

I am going to take it apart again and try to re-arrange my spacers. A guy at a bike shop suggested I take emery cloth to the inside of my stem??? anymore suggestions?
