My Lemond Victoire has a cracked downtube. It's about an inch or more running perpendicular to the tube and emanates outward from both sides of the cable stop. Has anyone experienced the same on their Lemond? I'm suprised to have this occur on a Ti frame.

Ti frames are not immune from failures just like any other material - especially a new design like the Lemond. Serotta had a series of failures around the cable bosses in the beginning. It's one of the risks with buying something in it's first year. Obviously you need to go straight back to the dealer and do a warranty claim. Be nice but firm with them and insist that they expidite the claim. They usually reserve the right to repair or replace so while getting another brand new frame might be quicker it isn't automatic - this is where *your* attitude can make a difference.

Lemond frames use Reynolds Ti tubes. I don't know anything about these tubes but I doubt Reynolds actually makes them. Most likely, some US company is processing the tubes and shipping them to Reynolds. The tubes are "butted" although Ti butting is not the same process as steel tube butting. Maybe the tube is too thin at the cable stops and the welding process it taking some strength out of the tube? Also, Lemond (Trek) does not have much experience with Ti. Of course they will learn as they go and Trek offers a great warranty so you don't have much to worry about.

Good luck,

Ed

I have a 2001 Victoire. Is yours a year prior to that?

Mine is a 2001 red one (an early model with about 6k miles). I spoke to a few dealers who have not seen this occur on any other Victoire or Tete de Course models. Just found out my replacement is being sent tomorrow so only a few days longer without a bike.
