I want to use egg beater pedals on my road bike and need to know what the pattern difference is between spd and spd-r. Thanks!

No go. SPD-R has cleat mounting holes that run lengthwise along the sole (fore-aft). This contrasts with the mouting pattern of SPD which runs across the shoe.

Some shoes have adapters for either. Sidi comes to mind..

Many shoes also have dual drillings.You have to see what yours are.
