Got caught in the rain yesterday 2 hrs of heavy downpoor.
tring to decide whatkind of lube to use on the rear der
guide pulley (Shimano 2001) it says it's a ceramic bushing
even the Barnetts PDF manual is confusing, does it get oil
or grease. When I use grease (Phil Wood waterproof) the pulley seems to squeek, confused? anyone?

There has been a lot of discussion threads about using aftermarket pulleys - lots of opinion and not much fact is available. The aftermarket pulleys and the newest DuraAce pulleys are somewhat sealed so they don't have quite as much a problem with water. They both still do get water and dirt past the seals. Last Saturday it rained and I spent some time cleaning and relubing my roadbike and went through some of my spare parts, including a couple of sets of older DA ceramic pulleys. I do keep them in case a friend needs a replacement. I lube them with T-9 Boeshield. It seems to last longer and doesn't attract as much dirt as the oils or greases.

I never had luck fixing the upper pulley in Ultegra or 105. Tried oil, grease, and even dry. Even brand new they either make too much noise or too much friction. I use Dura Ace or an aftermarket sealed pulley and they seem to last forever.
