I have a mid 80's Pinarello Trevisio with full suntour superbe pro group. Freewheel is 7 speed. 11-21 which is fine for rolling terrain but I recently moved to a mountain town and am riding alot of mountain passes and it's killing me! So I need a biggergear in the rear . So my question is - will my superbe pro rear der push onto a 27 tooth gear (7 speed)? 2nd question -I was surprised that I was able to fit my buddy's 8 speed wheel into my drop outs- will the superbe pro der push an 8 or 9 speed cluster or will I need a different derrailleur? I'd like to keep the bike all suntour.

Don't know about your specific setup, but I have been using a 7 speed Ultegra with an 8 speed hub for a few years now. The derrailleur is a little finicky sometimes and the biggest cog doesn't really work because the derrailleur rubs on the spokes. But, if the wheel fits, why not give it a go and see?
yes, with the shimano 600 r der 7spd works as well as 8spdPeterRider

I've replaced a 1996 shimano 8spd 600 rear derailleur by an older (maybe 91-92) 7spd shimano 600 rear derailleur, it works exactly the same. Was probably the same model derailleur.

So what are you using for shifters?Spoke Wrench

My bet is the derailleur will handle the 27 tooth cog, but it probably won't index very well unless you can find a Suntour spaced freewheel. Good luck.

Converting to 8 speed wouldn't be worth it to me considering the cost and limited benefit. I think you can still get 8-speed freewheels, but you'll have to respace your rear axle and redish your rear wheel. You will also increase your likelihood of bending a rear axle.

Plenty of options in 7 speed freewheels with a bigger cog. Most are shimano index compatible, but suntour 7 speed spaacing was the same as shiano anyway. No problem with the suntour derailer and ability to shift 8 or 9 cogs, but if the system is not index,it isn't likely to work with index shifters.Big if, is how large a cog the suntour deralier will shift, but my guess is at least a 28.
