Rear Mech; XT or Ultegra?(4 posts)

Rear Mech; XT or Ultegra?StevieP

I am going to stick an XT 11-34 cassette on my road bike for the real steep hills.

Should I go for an XT rear mech or can I get a long cage Ultegra that will work just as well? What's the difference?

I know I will need a longer chain.

The Ultegra has the upper derailleur pulley positioned too high to handle the big (32 - 34 tooth) cog.

Contrary to popular belief, the long cage ultegra wraps more chain, but does not shift larger rear cogs than the short cage. Short and long cage XTR both shift the same large cog,but the short cage wraps less chain.
BIG myth...Matno

Wow! I had no idea that was a false notion. I could of sworn that the short cage XTR derailleurs had a smaller max sprocket size (and I know a TON of people believe that), but sure enough, both short and long cage have a max sprocket of 34 teeth! (I checked Shimano's website). It's just the total capacity that is smaller. Interesting. Perhaps previous models had smaller max sprocket capacity?...
