9spd hub with an 8spd cassette??Mounty

I have been building my own mountain bike wheels for a while and a friend wants me to build him a new road bike wheel. He somehow managed to break the flange off his rear hub and along with it about three spokes and ruined the rim so I'm starting from scratch here. So my question is this:
Will a 9 speed hub accept his existing 8 speed cassette (as it will on a mountain bike) or does it need to be shimmed (as a 7 speed cassette would on a mountain bike) or am I better off trying to find an 8 speed hub. However, I am not having much luck finding the latter and I've already interogated the usual suspects (mail-order and LBS')

Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

If it's Shimano, the newer hubs are 8/9 speed.
