|30x21? Is there anything out there?||niteschaos|

|I just got into road biking. Since I ride in Greenville, SC, I didn't take the option and get the triple removed from my bike and put a double on instead cause I wanted to get into racing. I was afraid I wouldn't be able to climb some of the mountains around here. Well, with the triple I can climb trees if my tires would grib.
However, if I get a double and end up having to stand to get over some of these climbs, how much standing is too much? I only stand for a few seconds at a time, but I see some pro's stand for 10 minutes at a time, so how much is too much for a wanna-be racer before he should admit he is over geared? I'm thinking of switching from my triple to a 39x53 with my 11-21 rear.

|39x21 is a 50.1 inch gear, almost identical to a 30x16 (50.6 inches). If you're comfortable climbing in your 30x 16 or higher, you'll be fine with the double(of course you could also switch the cassette to 12-23 or 12-25 if you need a little more help up the hills). Peace and good riding.|

|I think you should gear so that you never *have* to stand. Gear so you can sit all the time, and stand only when you want to. That's my theory.
