STI - Dura-Ace vs. Ultegra(4 posts)

STI - Dura-Ace vs. UltegraUTE
Jul 21, 2002 5:37 PM
Been reading the many reviews of both STi units here, and looking for confirmation. According to the reviews, the Ultegra unit is not worth the 'paper' thew reviews are written on. Review after review talks about lack of durability, etc. While the reviews for the D/A STI are all but perfect, close to 5 of 5. Do others reading this column agree with that generality?? Also the Ultegra reviews seem to be for the 6501 model, while the most recent offering appears to be the 6510. Is this a type-o or did Shimano actually go back and improve (yeah I know, but I had to ask). Thanx Folks !!!

I recently upgraded from Ultegra shifters to DA. Trust me, don't waste your time with Ultegra! It's worth the $50-60 to get DA, it just plain works that much better.

have both, DA is better, but my Ultegra has been flawless so if money is tight, don't bother.

I put 4 seasons on a set of Ultegra 6501 STI shifters (and drive train) with zero complaints... not even the legendary STI rattle that some complain of. I'd never badmouth Ultegra.

But depending on what pricing you have, the DA (which I switched to 4 months ago) is prettier finish, a tad lighter, and shifts with a tighter, preciser feel (IMO).

YMMV.
