In an article on Velonews Lance talked about switching to a new model Shimano pedal. Any ideas what these are? Are they different from the SPD-R stuff?

I read they were prototypes, not available yet. They appear to be more of a Look design.

I remember seeing pics this spring, maybe in Velonews? The pedal body looks quite a bit like the SPD-R, with a similar toe hook, but the rear clip is much closer to a Look style. No shots of the cleat, unfortunately, so I can't say if it's metal or plastic.
I'm sure the big S were embarassed by Lance's continued use of the old, fairly heavy (415 g/pr) PD-7401's, but having seen a few accidental releases on SPD-R, I can't blame him for going dependable. I have some of the Ultegra Looks, and they're very very nice, even though they weigh 100 grams over PP-357's.
The new design is supposed to offer better retention while dropping lots of weight, and considering the details of Lance's climbing bikes, I'm sure losing major weight on the pedals was important.

I recently saw them at a First Union Race on top of Frankie's car. They are very Look like. What I noticed was they haven't decided on a material for the rear claw. The pedals I saw were molded in black and a natural colored plastic material. I guess they really are prototypes.
