What is the best stiff pipe frame under 1000? I need an upgrade to build a road bike for the mountains.

You can still find new CAAD3's at shops for around $400, as well as CAAD4's (old school headset) and CAAD5's. Good bang for the buck.

Got a Specialized M4 this Spring from Supergo for $300. That left $700 for wheels, tires, bars, etc. If you're not set on a particular brand or model you can save big $$$$. Turns out the M4 was exactly what I wanted. They were selling GT frames for dirt cheap also.

I have a TCR and a Dale. The C'Dale feels way stiffer, however I think the TCR has a better balance between stiffness and comfort. The TCR is also lighter. Ride them both then make a decision.
TCR if you're not over 180#, Dale if you areJohnG

The TCR is a MUCH more comfy frame in any case.
