Cable housing...(2 posts)

Cable housing...old_db

I have an old pair of Shimano 105 STI levers that I am moving from an old bike to my daily ride -- I was wondering if I want 4mm or 5mm derailler cable housing. I was thinking of just getting a length of it from Nashbar:

Also, it appears that the bike I am cannibalizing routes both the derailler cable and brake cables through the same diameter housing -- can you use the same housing for both?

SIS cable is for shifters. It comes in both 4 and 5 mm versions - no functional differences. I like the 4 mm version for road bikes along with plastic ferules. Brake cable is a different construction and only comes in the larger size. Don't mix and match the housing since they are designed for different purposes.

While you're at it, try to find some "slick" stainless cables. They provide smooth shifting and will not rust like coated cables.

Good luck.
