I bough one off ebay and am wondering if anyone knows the stem size that way I don't have to bother my LBS about it.

Do you mean what size is the head tube - that the stem bolts on to? My Univega's is 1" [2001 modo vincere]. My 1 1/8 stem needs a shim to work.

You can probably tell by looking at it. If it's an older bike and the stem looks like it's one piece, an L-shaped thing, it's probably 1-inch (which ISN'T one inch, just to make things confusing, it's 22.2mm) but could be 1 1/8. If the stem part clamps onto the top of the steerer tube (a threadless headset), it's probably 1 1/8. If you can't find a new quill stem, check www.rivendellbicycles.com
