7 speed drivetrain dilemma(4 posts)

7 speed drivetrain dilemmaGrand Pooh Bear

I am riding a '98 bike with a 7 speed RSX drivetrain. I understand that quality parts are getting hard to come by for such a set up, so I decided to buy a rear cluster now so I have it next year when I need to replace it. The problem is that the cluster I bought is an IG and I think the present cluster is HG. Are any other other chains besides a Shimano IG chain compatible, or does it not matter? Will my front chainrings be affected? I cannot afford a new bike or even a new, more up to date drivetrain, so I must make due with what I have. Anyone know how long before decent 7 speed stuff goes extinct?, because I refuse to buy Huffy-quality parts. Wait, aren't those terms mutually exclusive?

been riding 7 speed for 14 years and don't plan to stop anytime soon. I think the cassettes should be available for a long time. I'm still riding 7sp freewheels.

I just put a SRAM chain on my old 7 speed MTB drivetrain. Cheaper, quieter and smoother shifting.
Yeah, SRAM--I think it's a PC-48 (??) nmcory
