New stem for 1999 Klein Q-Pro(3 posts)

New stem for 1999 Klein Q-Promfuchs1
Jun 14, 2002 8:27 AM
I have a 1999 Klein Quantum Pro and I want to change stems. The only problem is that the steerer tube is bigger than 1" but smaller than 1 1/8". Has anybody ever switched stems on one of the bikes? Do you have to make a shim or can you have a 1" stem machined to fit? I really don't NEED to change it but I am Upgrading to record 10 speed (from Chorus 8 speed) and thought that a Look carbon stem would look really cool with the carbon levers and Easton carbon bars and save some weight without losing a lot of stiffness.

I recently put a 3T 'Forge Ahead' stem on my 2000 Quantum. I had to use the shim that came with it but it's working great. Great handling, stiff as all get out at 120mm. It's not 'carbon' looking but it is a dead sexy adonized gray aluminum, single piece cast, no sloppy welds. I think most quality stems come with a proper shim these days, or at least one is offered as an extra for smaller than 1 1/8 steerers.
Those Look stems are pretty cool looking.

Both the Quantum and the Quantum Race have either 1" or 1 1/8' standard sized steerer tubes depending on their year. The Quantum Pro pre-2002 uses Klein's Airhead set which is somewhere in between. The on inch shim that comes with most stems is too small and a 1 1/8" is too large. Thanks for the advice but we are talking about two different animals here.
