HELP! no derailleur barrel adjustment on Giant frame!tj90
Jun 13, 2002 11:14 AM
I just built a Giant TCR frame with Campy Chorus Ergo. I noticed the frame does not have threaded "braze-ons" for the barrel adjusters. Rather, it has standard non-threaded "braze-ons" like you would see on a brake line.
The shop gave me these silver long pieces that you put in line on the cable that allow you to adjust the cable tension. All the bikes that I have seem with these plastic adjusters are built with Shimano and usually placed directly inboard of the shifter body. Since campy has hidden routing, Im forced to put them close to the frame. Due to the compact geometry, this is less than optimal due to the angle that the cable enters the downtube.
Im curious if anyone has built a frame up like this with campy. What did you do? Ever heard of another solution or adapter that may exist that Im not aware of? A friend suggested that I could take an old mtn bike shifter barrel adjuster and retrofit it to the frame. Any help would be appreciated....

Use an inline adjuster but locate it about halfway through the exposed length of the housing near the frame.

I use Shimano but I hate the way the barrel adjusters look hanging directly off the shift lever. I run mine into the cable stop as you mention - works fine (but my frame is standard). The only caveat is that if you put them into the cable stops, put a little bit of clear tape (like the ski skin saver stuff) on the head tube under where the barrels will contact the tube to protect the paint. Works great and you can't see the tape under the adjuster.

ONCE team bikes are built up with Record. Check one to see where the barrel adjusters are located.

Thanks for all the help guys! I contacted Giant knowing that ONCE may have the same problem as me. They put me in touch with Dave Lettieri of Fastrack Bicycles in Santa Barbara. He builds the Giants with Campy and sold me 2 barrel adjustments for the frame. He gave me a good price - $6 for the pair shipped. They are in the QBP catalog with the following P/N BR4040. Thanks Dave for the help and good price! If you guys want any, call him at 805-884-0210 or www.fastrackbicycles.com
