|My girlfriend is looking at getting another wheelset for her CX bike, which has 135mm rear wheel spacing. She is looking mostly at pre-builts (Mavics, Rolfs, Perfomance, etc.) which obviously all have 130mm spacing.
Is there any adverse affect in squeezing the frame the extra 5mm to make the wheels work, or should we concentrate on finding a wheel that I could swap out a mountain bike axle with (i.e. Crossmax axle in a Mavic road wheelset)?
The frame is titanium, so it seems to flex easily enough - I put my ksyrium's on her bike last nite and it appeared to be ok.
Any suggestions or experience would be greatly appreciated!

|Frames right and left sides don't always flex the same amount and even if they do, the dropout alignment will be off and may leave you with a less-secure wheel connection. Not only will the skewer be squeezing the hub against the dropouts, it will also be attempting to pull the dropouts into alignment again. I actually tweaked a frame once by putting 135 hubs into 127 dropouts.
An axle swap on the hub will give you the correct dropout spacing but will leave you with an incorrectly dished wheel (the drive side location does not change based on hub width). The cheapest way would be to place a 5mm spacer on the non-drive side (if the hub can do this) and re-center the rim.

|Spacers are the obvious fix, if you don't want to build up another wheel. If it were me, though, I'd probably just jam it in there and hope for the best.
One thing to watch for, though: Make sure your GF is strong enough to install the wheel by herself. It takes some strength to squeeze that sucker in there. My wife's pretty small, and she has trouble with that kind of stuff. Can't even pump a tire past 80psi...

|She should be plenty strong enough to get the job done. The frame actually flexs that 5mm with ease.
Not to mention, she beat me by 10 minutes at the last MTB race!

|We might be able to space the retaining nuts out just a bit, but if you add too much there is no axle left to seat in the dropouts.
I measured one (road) axle and it was 135mm end to end by itself.
