Will newer 9 speed deraileurs work with an 8 speed system? I am asking about index shifting to an 8 speed cassette. The front chain rings, chain, are 9 speed.

I know someone will say, get a 9 speed rear cluster, but the index shifters on the aero bars would also have to go.

I have an Ultegra 9-speed derailer on my Shimano-8 system, and it works better than the original.

One word of caution--the 9-speed derailers have longer cages and larger pulleys than the 8-speed version. If your chain is tightly trimmed, you might find that the new cage and pulley reduce the amount of free chain you have.

Other than that, they work great!
