Old School wheels worthwhile to race?(2 posts)

Old School wheels worthwhile to race?hammer_cycle

I have 2 sets of wheels I use for racing, Zipp 404's for rolling/flat courses and Rolf Sestrieres for hills/crits. I also have an old set of Tubular Mavic GEL280, GL330 rims that are in need of a rebuild (box design). I'm bored at work and I'm wondering if I would get any benefit out of rebuilding this wheelset (Chris King hubs, lightweight spokes, etc..). I think the big benefit would be that they would be 3 cross and flex considerably less than either of the other 2 sets of wheels (good for crits or hilly races maybe?). Obviously, being the old-school box design, they wouldn't be very aero. Is it worthwhile to build up this set of wheels or just leave them hanging on the wall?

Thanks in advance.
huge improvement over rolfsstr8dum1

those would be excellent critwheels. aero is not important in a crit. very very few crits end in a solo break and if they did, are you the rider that does so. prolly not. i'd race on the gel rims/ king hubs over the rolfs anyday!!

plus i'm sure there are plenty of RRs that are on crappy roads that there is no reason to beat up your 404s on.
