It's time to swap my 12-27 this weekend. And I'm thinking 12-23 since I mostly do fast training. (double chain ring of course) The only chance I get to do some climbing is on the weekends and even then I rarely, if ever, need 27 teeth. Can someone please tell me the gears on a 12-23 and 12-25 cassette? Any input from users of these cogs is appreciated. manofsteel

12, 13, 14, 15, 17, 19, 21, 24, 27

which you should get depends on where you are. if you're in a relatively flat area, get the 12-23. I race in the Midwest (collegiate) and the 23 has been enough to get me up every hill I've ever faced. the 12-27 is basically the same as the 12-25 except for the last 2 cogs (actually the last 3; they're bolted together). do you need 24 or 25 teeth during the weekend climbs? if so, you might wish to stick to the 27 unless it's worn out, in which case I would say a 25.

12-23: 12,13,14,15,16,17,19,21,23
12-25: 12,13,14,15,17,19,21,23,25
12-27: 12,13,14,15,17,19,21,24,27

If you notice both the 12-27 and 12-25 are missing the 16 cog. Since I race, I actually have all three cassettes and switch them each week depending on the difficulty of the hills. On the flats I do notice the missing 16, but some of the hills in the NW can be very steep so having something bigger than a 23 is necessary if you want to stay seated up the climb. I actually like climbing most hills in the 24 and my big ring during a race, and you don't have the 16 with either the 12-27 or 12-25 so if you are just going to stick with one for all kinds of conditions then I would stick with the 12-27. There are special conditions on a long medium grade hill that make the 23 and 25 nice to have, but if I am not racing then it does not make much difference. If you are a lightweight or don't have many really steep hills around then go with the 12-23 since you get that sweet 16.

The Ultegra 13 - 25 has the 16: 13 14 15 16 17 19 21 23 25
You don't see this one advertized much. Its in the Shimano catalog and on the websites for Branford Bike and Harris cyclery.
