Cat Eye Computer mount for Deda Magic 31.7 bars..DINOSAUR
May 10, 2002 8:51 AM
I hit search and couldn't locate anything on this topic. My new ride has Deda Magic 31.7 oversized bars. I went to install my new Cate Eye Mitty 3 computer and discovered that the mounting bracket for the computer display will not fit around the Magic bars. It clips on the bike, but the screw is no long enough and I attemped to use a longer screw but it would not line up. My LBS said Cate Eye has an adapter for the Magic bars and he ordered one. But this could be a couple of weeks. I can use the computer as long as I'm not too heavy handed. Has anyone else encountered this problem and solved it with out going to a different computer (such as Sigma which will attached to the Deda Newton Stem)?

I apologize if this is an old topic...I figure with all the knowledge here someone would know off the top of their head..

There's a product called a "nob" that mounts onto my stem.

"Cronometro NOB. A universal computer mount that fits on ALL mountain or road stems or handlebars including clip on aero style bars. Allows the computer head to be mounted 90 degrees to what the original bracket was designed for. Tightens like a hose clamp; note the screw at the bottom."

I got it at my LBS, but here's an online link...

I have an Enduro on an MTB so I'm assuming your Cateye uses pretty much the same type of mount. Since this only has to last for few weeks I'd get some double sided outdoor mounting tape (any hardware or grocery store) and line the inside of the mount with it. Between the clamp wrapping the bar and the double sided tape this should hold well enough to last till the new mount comes in.

Use a zip tieDave Hickey

Use a zip tie in place of the screw. I have an oversize Solido bar and it works great.

I lost the screw to the computer on one of my bikes. Stuck a zip tie on it as a temp fix 2 yrs ago.

i just finished my new bike with newton 31.7 bars and used the same mount that i had been using on the standard size bars. put the mount on the part of the bar you normally would. like you said, there's no way the screw will reach.
i ran a 6 inch, very thin zip tie thru the two holes and pulled it tight. the plastic mount will confrom to the shape of the bar and once the computer head is on the bar, you can't even see the zip tie! it's secure and a very cheap fix!

Dino:

I was in a similar situation. I've used a Cateye HB100 for many years, and had a problem mounting it on the oversized Deda Newton bars that I switched to over this past winter.

I emailed Cateye, and they informed me that they do make a mount that will fit oversized bars, stating that this could be ordered by any LBS. Unfortunately my LBS never heard of oversized bars, and had no idea what 31.75mm bars were.

I recently had a business trip to Vancouver, Canada, and found the part at an outdoor store call Mountain Equipment Coop. IIRC, it only costs about $13.00 Canadian. They do mailorder, and their web site is www.mec.ca.

BTW, the mount itself has an adjustable clamp, similar to the clamps for forks. It can fit bars from something like 25.0 to 31.8 mm, with no need to cut the clamp, making it transferable between bikes with different sized bars.

IMHO, a much more elegant solution than a zip tie.

Good luck with your search!
