More Ultegra STI shifter problems...need help!TWD
May 8, 2002 8:04 AM
I just got a brand new right Ultegra STI lever back from Shimano as a warranty. The old one broke last year after 300 miles of light use.

I installed the lever the other day and can't get it to work properly. When I shift down into a harder gear it works fine, but the next time I try to shift up into an easier gear the large lever won't engage and it swings through it's full range of travel like it is taking up slack in the cable. If I let the lever return and try shifting up again it makes the shift just fine.

This happens in all gears. The cables are in good shape and appear to have enough cable tension.

I'm puzzled, can anyone shed some light?
I can't really afford the down time of sending them back to Shimano as I have an important race coming up.

Thx

Excuse me for asking what might be the obvious, but are you sure that you have the cable end correctly seated in the shifter? Your problem sounds typical of this problem and I've had this happen. Shift all the way down with the little lever, remove the cable and ensure that you're looking at the recessed area that the cable end rests. Rethread the cable and ensure that it seats all the way. Run the lever through the gear positions with light tension applied by hand to the cable end. Shift all the way down and secure to the rear deraileur while in the smallest cog. This gets you "in phase the fastest".

No excuses necessary

I'm pretty sure I got the cable seated in there, but I didn't run through the all the gears before hooking the cable to the derailler like usual. I gotta stop working on bikes at 2:00 AM!!!

I'll give it another look tonight.

Thanks

Well,

I checked the cable last night, and it was seated correctly. Dang, I guess that means I have to live with it for a while then send it back to Shimano later.

That Sucks!!!

The 105 STI levers on my CX have been flawless, the Ultegra's on my road bike have been nothing but trouble.

If you are getting no resistence when moving the small lever, try lubricating the lever. Move the levers to the side so you can see the inner workings and Saturate the area with a relatively dry lubricant (I use spray-on tri-flow for my 105s, but another product may be better).

if your cable is situated correctly in the shifter, you are a victim of another bad shifter. i am a shop mechanic, and built one bike that required 3 rt hand sti levers to be returned to shimano, brand new out of the box, before the fourth worked. good thing we had a bunch of shifter blades in stock...if shimano was serviceable, like campy, this would not be a problem.
