rear derailleur problem (campy)(2 posts)

rear derailleur problem (campy)nyedid

my rear derailleur (campy chorus) has started being really weird and i'm wondering if someone can help me. it shifts fine up until about the sixth gear, and then it feels like there's too much tension, 'cause it shifts really poorly up from there. when i'm trying to downshift out of the top gear, it sometimes won't go, or i have to push the thumb button a few times to make it downshift. i had a friend look at it and he seconded this assessment. could it be that i need a new cable? a new rear derailleur? new cable housings? could the cable be stuck? help!

First you check the cables for any kinks or frayed strands, then you clean and lube the cables, and if that doesn't work, replace the cables. We'll assume that you've lubed the derailleur pivots and the shifters, and that the derailleur body is angled back far enough so that the top of the pulley cage isn't hitting the cogs. When you say "feels like there's too much tension" are you saying "BEHAVES like there's too much tension" because of the way it shifts, or does it really get harder to push the lever? And for clarification, when you say "top gear" do you mean largest cog, or smallest cog?
