I'm currently using Speedplay X1 and I have following questions for those using Speedplay Zeros:

1. Is the float "free" on Zeros just like it is on the X-seris pedals? Or does it feel different in any way?

2. Is the release mechanism the same as it is on the X-series pedals -- meaning you just clip out when you reach the angle without any tension? The reason why I ask this question is this: I understand that you can adjust the Zeros to have no float at all. If you do this (and if there is no tension before release), how do you stay clip in? Wouldn't turning your foot even slightly cause you to clip out?

The Zeros are fully adjustable from 0 - 15 degrees float. There is a no resistance over the range of float you set. However, once you reach the limits of the float, there is a definite resistance to overcome in order to click-out unlike the X-series Speedplays.

I had trouble with my new Zeros because the click in force felt really excessive. I had to stand on them to click in. I have not used the X-series Speedplays, but I understand that clicking into Zeros requires more force in general compared to the X-series. The Zeros use C-shaped metal clips in their cleats that engage and hold the pedal. The C-clips held in place by plastic on their top and sides, and the metal skid plate on the bottom. On both of my shoes (Sidi Genius 4), the plastic lip at one end of the C-chip broke off. The purpose of the plaste lips at each end of the C-clips was to hold the clips open a little wider to make clicking in easier.

I called Speedplay and their Customer Service was very helpful. They ask me what color my C-clips were (silver or black). I don't know what the difference is between them the colors, but I had black. They suggested that I use minimal force to tighten down the cleats to my shoes. They immediately mailed me replacement cleats. I noticed that the new ones they sent me used a different type of set screw (much finer threads) for the float adjustment, but otherwise they looked like the original ones I had including the black colored C-clips. I installed them and only gently tightened the screws. The result was that only light to moderate pressure is now needed to click-in as opposed to the very high pressure that was required originally. I think I had overtighten my cleats originally and maybe that not only made clicking in hard, but contributed to the plastic lips breaking off.

I am happy now with the Zeros. Once I get some significant miles on this pedals, I'll let every know how the plastic portion of the pedals is holding up. I really like the ability to set the float limits on each pedal to my liking and knowing where the limits are because of the click-out force required.

Bacco, thank you for the information. It was very helpful. Regarding the click-in force on all speedplay pedals, it has everything to do with how much you tightened the 4 outer screws. The more you tighten, the harder it is to clip in and out. This is the most common complaint among the first time users who did not read the instruction. Speedplay suggests that you tighten these bolts snug and then give only quarter turn extra. They claim that the blue lock tight on the threads of these screws will hold them in place. Now about my second question regarding Zeros setup with no float... I think you are saying that this is possible because "there is a definite resistance to overcome in order to click-out unlike the X-series Speedplays". Is this correct?

5ive - yes, you can definitely set up the Zeros for no float and know when you are in or out because of the resistance at the limits of the float.

Guess I should have read the instructions before I mounted my Zeros on my shoes. I really like them now. I have them adjusted so clicking in requires light pressure. I amazed at how much difference it makes depending on how much you torque the four outer screws. I didn't figure the cleats would flex that much.
