I am wanting to upgrade my current ride to DA but cant afford to do it all at once (actually cant make that large of a purchase at one time w/o tipping off the spouse). If I purcahse the levers first will my Ultegra rear der. and cass. work If not, what is the best order to purchase and install the new components as I go?

If you are going 9-speed to 9-speed and your crank-set is a double it will be completely compatible, (hee hee) sounds like your compatibility problems are not with the bike.

Nine speed to nine speed, no problem. If your updating pre-nine speed, You must replace the rear derailluer and the shifters together.
