Trunk car racksPaulCL

My ten year old rack is about dead. May it rest in peace.

So, on to bigger and better things. I need a trunk mount rack (I think) that will fit both my Maxima and the wife's minivan. I need one to hold at least three bikes, or even better,more...

I looked at the Saris rack from Colorado cyclists - any thoughts? any better suggestions?

Thanks. Paul

(What a boring topic, sorry)

Trunk racks are bad news unless your budget just won't permit another option. And putting 3 bikes on one seems like just asking for trouble. A much higher failure rate than other racks, no way to securely lock bikes to car, and a bouncing ride that's hard on bikes, rack, and car paint. Even if you could find one, I'm doubting that your Maxima and minivan could share the same model.

All that being said, Saris does get better reviews than most.

I know the pricing is criminal, but looking quality roof racks will last forever, even add value to the resale price of a vehicle (if you want). Other option (especially if you want to interchange between vehicles) is hitch mounted (but you'd need to install hitches on both cars). Check out the good stuff from Yakima and Thule. Once you get past the sticker shock, you won't be sorry.

Just my thoughts.
Would have to agree, howevercyclerant

Roof rack is a tough investment for 2 cars and the hitch side of it is bucks as well. If you go the hitch route check out Sportworks racks as they hold any bike and make loading extra easy. If you have to go the trunk rack route don't spend the $$$ on a new one I have a Saris 3 bike that will fit both vehicles and I'll be happy to cut you a deal on it. Hope you don't really care about the paint jobs on either car.

OK..OK...I know a trunk rack isnt' the best, but I've been using a rhode gear for about ten years without any problems. But after ten years, the plastic is starting to crack in various places, so I really don't trust it anymore.

I have a receiver hitch rack sitting in my garage. I used it on my Jeep for the last 7 years, but I recently sold the Jeep and bought the Maxima. I don't want to put a hitch on the Maxima AND my minivan. And I can't put a roof rack on the Maxima because I'll still need a trunk rack for the minivan. Just too expensive.

So, I have an "extra" receiver hitch rack in my garage..want it?? Wanna trade for the Saris?? I'll cut you a deal. Does the Saris mar your trunk?? I've never had a problem at all with my trunk rack. Does your Saris hold two or three bikes? How old is it?? yadda yadda yadda...all the standard questions.

I guess I should go to my LBS and at least look at a Saris before I buy one. Email me and we'll talk. Paul
