8 speed using MTB gear??(3 posts)

8 speed using MTB gear??ST
Apr 16, 2002 8:41 AM
I have a Shimano 105 8 speed roadbike that I bought in 97. I would like to convert the bike for the purpose of climbing only. Instead of upgrading to 9 spd triple crankset, which will cost $300-400, I would like to install a 7-8-9 compatible speed XT or XTR rear deraileur, and a 9speed 12-34 cassette. Would this work set up work? Will I get 8spd shifter allow me to get all 9 spd? Or should I use an 8 speed 11-32 XTR cassette?

Thanks
Gotta run 8-speed cassette.JS

The spacing is different. The 12-32 XTR cassette will work fine but you'll need a MTB rear derailleur that will handle the larger cogs.

8 speed STI will not work with 9 speed cassette. Each shift has to pull the cable the proper distance of cable to make the rear deraileur to move the correct amount.
