what should i look for in a shoe to make sure it's compatible with speedplay pedals? does the "SPD" i've read places stand for speedplay? thanks!

Look for a LOOK three hole compatible shoe or a time four hole shoe. You shouldn't have much of a problem because most shoes are drilled for at least LOOK. SPD stands for Shimano Pedaling Dynamics or something similar which is most mountain bike shoes now use. Speedplay Frogs (off-road version) will work with this, however road speedplays X-type and zero need road shoes.

SPD-R shoes (e.g. the R-150) are not supposed to work with speedplays due to insufficient crankarm clearance. that having been said, my R150s work with my X2s - the cleats are as 'inward' on the shoes as the mounting system will allow. i do not know how this would work out with X1s and their shorter spindle.
