Rear Brake Squeeks(2 posts)

Rear Brake Squeeksscottb

I have a new Bianchi Veloce (2 months old). On a group ride last weekend the rear brake started to squeek when I applied a fair amount of pressure to stop. This is the first time it has happened. I don't believe it was caused by water. Any suggestions as to what the problem may be and how I could fix it?

Thanks,

Toed in a little?retro

The standard fix (or at least the first thing to try) is to set the pads so they're slightly toed in--that is, so the front edge of the brake pad touches the rim just a hair ahead of the rear edge. You'll need a tool or two, but it's fairly easy, though finicky, to do.
It's normal for a new bike to need little tweaks like that as parts wear in. You might want to check the cables, too--they've probably stretched a little, and a turn or so on the barrel adjuster will firm them up.
