|Can somebody enlighten me on what is really compatible? Every time I see these words there is a * after it that says, "some features may not work with this shifter." Shimano's site is even less help. I am especially interested in getting the estimated cadence using an Ultegra 6500, 6501 or 6510.

|What you are looking for is shifters that have the electronic interface for the Flight Deck. Shimano has thoughtly marked most of these with the words "Flight Deck" on the shifter. My belief is that Ultegra ST-6500 shifters won't have it and won't give you the gear indicator and virtual cadence functions. If you are the suspicious type, you can look under the hood and under the screw-on cover that hides the connection. Seven speed Sora shifters, for example, have the cover, but no connection underneath.
The next thing you need is the correct wire harness. The only difference here, believe it or not, is the hoods. ST-6501 levers will have two button blisters on the right hood and require the SM-6500 wire harness. ST-6510 levers have one button blister on each lever hood and require the 6500RS harness or the SM-6501 wireless harness.

|I was going to write a paragraph about how stupid I thought it was for Shimano to produce such a confusing array of wire harnesses, but I decided not to.|| |
